Web Content management systems: Estonian market overview

19th February 2009 by René Lasseron | Add comment

We compiled a script to find out the market shares of web content management systems (CMS) here in Estonia. The script tries to guess a technology used by a website based on the page HTML code. In addition we also searched for administrator log in form in /admin subfolder.

Analysed sites

In total, 33 389 websites with domain name in format of www.sitename.ee were scanned. This should cover most of Estonian public websites which are in daily use. The outcome:

9 485 (28%) sites use branded software or custom backend created by a known web firm to dynamically generate the pages. Out of those, 7 177 use proprietary sofware and 2 308 or aproximately 25% run on open source CMS.
1 006 (3%) sites are most probably static, created using tools such as MS Frontpage or MS Word.
22 898 (69%) times we did not detect any widely known technology.

Content management systems

When comparing the market shares of CMS-es, we put on the same scale known packaged CMS-es such as Joomla or Wordpress and custom sites created by web firms like Hansanet or CMA who usually use their own non-packaged framework or code base.

Our script detected 199 different systems and/or web firms out of which the biggest market share takes open source Joomla (15%). Second place belongs to different websites created by web firm Hansanet (7%), followed by packaged Saurus CMS (6%) and Tiger CMS (5%).
Complete list of all systems can be downloaded here: eesti-cmsid-022009.csv

Static websites

We checked the „generator“ meta-tag to decide whether the site is static or not. Most sites in this group appeared to be generated by MS Frontpage (58%) and MS Word (24%). Adobe Golive, OpenOffice, MS Publisher, and others followed.

Other findings

Google Analytics was used by 1,6% 5,3% of all websites.
